The Nurturing Course
What is nurturing? Very simply, it’s caring for and fostering growth in yourself and in others. It’s important for everyone. Children (and parents, too) need limits, rules, understanding, warmth, and respect. All of these are a part of nurturing.
At Family Resources, the Nurturing Program encourages self-awareness and positive behavior for children, parents, foster parents, grandparents, and interested caregivers. We offer it in locations throughout Allegheny County. Group sessions last 2 hours, once each week, for 15 weeks. They’re free and confidential. You can feel safe in sharing your personal stories and ideas, and you can benefit from the peer support that develops among group members.
In your Nurturing Program sessions, you will learn new skills and build new ways of understanding your life and the life of your family. Our training staff will discuss the basics of healthy physical and emotional development for parents and children; how to form emotionally supportive parent-child relationships; ways to developing self-esteem for yourself and your child or children; and the importance of developing empathy for others.
Along the way, we’ll help you to understand your child’s developmental needs and expectations. You’ll learn how to reinforce positive, healthy interactions among family members, increase family communication, and manage stress and anger. And if you need to discipline your child, you’ll know how to use healthy nurturing behaviors instead of hurtful actions.
